It’s difficult to grasp the massive impact food waste has on society and the climate – after all, the 2.8 million tons of food wasted annually across the entire food chain in Switzerland alone is in itself barely conceivable (source: FOEN). Too Good To Go makes the numbers tangible, highlights what happens to our leftovers and, most importantly, shows us what we can do to waste less food.

More than one-third of all food is wasted. That’s like making three portions of hash browns and throwing one portion straight out of the window, or paying for three full bags of groceries and only taking two home with you. The fact is that every person in Switzerland discards an average of 90 kg of household food waste every year, which adds up to a national annual total of 2.8 million tons. Food waste has a major impact on the environment and is responsible for around 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, as revealed in the «Driven to Waste» report published by the WWF in July 2021. The impact is so significant that the NGO Project Drawdown has named reducing food waste the most effective measure in the fight against climate change.

Together against food waste with Too Good To Go
Since the launch of Too Good To Go in Switzerland in 2018, the Danish company’s aim has been to inspire and empower everyone in the fight against food waste. As the world's largest business-to-consumer marketplace for leftover food, the Too Good To Go app connects bakeries, restaurants, supermarkets and other businesses with consumers to ensure that food is eaten, not thrown away. In addition, Too Good To Go raises awareness of food waste through various campaigns and initiatives, for example in Switzerland with, among others, the “Waste Warrior Brands” (WAW Brands) and “Often longer good”. Too Good To Go aims to educate the people of Switzerland about the topic by providing regular information via blogs, media releases and other channels.

Leftover food is the largest mountain in Switzerland
Because numbers relating to food waste can often seem abstract, Too Good To Go takes concrete facts and figures and uses them as examples to make them more tangible and understandable. One example is this infographic:

Cook with the “REMIX” Recipe Cookbook by Too Good To Go
Too Good To Go Switzerland recently published its first cookbook. The new “Remix” cookbook offers inspirational ideas for turning commonly discarded foods into delicious meals. Instead of throwing away excess potatoes, surplus vegetables and leftover cheese, for example, simply use them the following day to make a tasty rösti.

“The purpose of the “Remix” recipe e-book is simple: to help you make the most of what you have on hand at home,” comments Alina Swirski, Country Manager of Too Good To Go Switzerland. “Each recipe shows you how to transform frequently discarded foods into fantastic new dishes.”

The e-book is available to download for free here.
